Both basic and applied research are part of discovery scholarship in the college. The expansive range of discovery scholarship in CDes gives our college extraordinary breadth and flexibility with which to perceive, respond to, collaborate on, and shape issues of concern to society.

Research support is also provided by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, as well as by the public and private sectors. The Graduate School annually distributes:

• $6 million in competitive fellowships to students
• $6 million in competitive research support and endowed professorship support to faculty

As a world class university, the university library is also one of the best in the world. It contains a collection of more than 5.7 million catalogued volumes and over 45,000 serials, and ranks 17th in size among American universities.
