ORIENTATION: Fall 2012

Again, welcome to the College of Design! The week of March 19th we will begin sending out orientation instructions to students who have confirmed their enrollment for fall 2012. This required two-day session during the summer is hosted by Orientation & First Year Programs (OFYP) and College of Design (CDes) staff. The main purpose of orientation is for you to:

  • Learn about your degree requirements (at which time you'll find out how any AP/IB/CIS/PSEO credits fit in). See AP and IB equivalency charts at right.
  • Find out about the necessary resources and tools to help you complete your degree in a timely manner.
  • Understand the difference between your responsibility and your adviser's responsibility in shaping your academic experience.
  • Register for a full time fall 2012 class schedule that meets your academic needs.

New Student Checklist:

Please review the checklist below to make sure you are prepared to come on campus for orientation this summer..

  • You must activate your internet account and keep a record of your internet ID and password. You will need this information to complete your online Pre Orientation Survey, take your placement exam, and register for classes at orientation. Your U of M email account is our official means of communication with you, so you must begin using and checking it ASAP.
  • Submit the online PRE ORIENTATION SURVEY after which you will be allowed to choose your orientation session. The deadline for choosing or changing your orientation session is May 31st, 2012. Note: Confirmation that you registered for your orientation session will be emailed to your U of M email account, so please please use and check your U of M email account often.

Note: It takes 5+ business days for the U of M to process your enrollment confirmation, so wait a while before you attempt to complete the Pre Orientation Survey. If by chance you take the survey and you get to the end of it and you cannot access the orientation Choose It system, email Lori Swenson to get the direct URL to the Choose It system, in which case you do NOT need to retake the survey.

  • Make sure your parent/guardian registers for Parent Orientation, which is held at the same time as student orientation. IMPORTANT: The College of Design holds a special CDes Parent Session in Rapson Hall at 8:30am on Day TWO of orientation. No registration is needed, but please make sure parents schedule this in!
  • Complete your required U of M Placement Exam by May 31st, 2012. Instructions are mailed with your orientation invitation or you can click on the above link.
  • Get your U Card before orientation. Complete and return the U Card Express Service forms you will receive in the mail from the U Card Office prior to your orientation date, or, feel free to get your U Card at orientation.
  • In order to verify that you have met U of M enrollment requirements, you must submit your final high school transcript, including date of graduation, to the Office of Admissions by the August 1st, 2012 deadline. When we receive your final transcript, we will review it to make certain you have maintained your strong academic record.
